Birth chart without a birth time: most of your chart doesn't depend on it

Updated October 30, 2026

A birth chart without a birth time still tells you most of what’s in it. Your Sun sign, the signs of most of your planets, your Life Path number and your Life’s Work Gene Key all come from the date alone. What waits for the time is the rising sign, the houses, the Moon’s exact place and parts of your Human Design.

So you can start today with what you know, and add the hour later if you find it.

Why the hour matters for some things and not others

A chart is a picture of where the planets were at one moment, seen from one place. The planets move at very different speeds, and that decides what the hour can change.

The Sun moves about one degree a day. Unless you were born on a day when it changed sign, your Sun sign is the same at 2 a.m. and at 11 p.m. Mercury, Venus and Mars move a little faster or slower than that, and the outer planets barely move in a day. For most birthdays, their signs are settled by the date.

The Moon is different. It travels about 13 degrees a day and changes sign every two and a half days or so. On roughly two days out of five, the Moon was in one sign in the morning and another by night.

The rising sign moves fastest of all. As the Earth turns, a new sign comes up over the eastern horizon about every two hours on average (faster or slower depending on how far you were born from the equator). The houses are counted from the rising sign, so they move with it. Without the time, there’s no rising sign and no houses to read.

What changes in Human Design

Human Design maps the same planets onto 64 gates, each a slice of the zodiac about five and a half degrees wide, and each gate is split into six lines. That fine grid makes the hour matter more:

  • The Moon’s gate. At 13 degrees a day, the Moon crosses two or three gates within a single day.
  • Your profile. Its first number is the line of your Sun. A line is a little under one degree wide, so the Sun can move to the next line during your birthday.
  • Type and authority. If the Moon or another fast planet completes a channel at one hour and not at another, your type or your authority can change with the time.

The Design side of the chart is calculated from the moment the Sun was 88 degrees earlier, roughly three months before birth. It also shifts with the hour you were born.

A worked example, from one day

Person A is invented: a chart the Codex uses for teaching, born on 28 July 1997. Here is what that one date does across 24 hours (UTC):

At 00:00At 12:00At 23:59
Sun4°58′ Leo, gate 31, line 45°27′ Leo, gate 31, line 45°56′ Leo, gate 31, line 5
Moon20°31′ Taurus, gate 2327°12′ Taurus, gate 83°48′ Gemini, gate 20

The Sun stays in Leo and in gate 31 all day, so Person A’s Sun sign, Human Design Sun gate and Life’s Work Gene Key are settled by the date alone. The Moon changes sign before midnight and passes through three gates. And late in the day, after the Sun reaches 5°45′ Leo, its line turns from 4 to 5, which would change the first number of the profile.

That is the whole problem in one table: most of the chart holds still, and a few parts depend on the hour.

How to find your time

  • Your birth certificate. In many countries the time is on the full or long-form certificate, even when the short version leaves it off.
  • Hospital records, if the hospital still keeps them.
  • Family. A parent, a grandparent, a baby book, a letter written that week. “Just after lunch” is already a useful range.

If you’re reading for someone else (a parent, a partner, a child), the same applies. Ask, or enter your best guess and treat the time-dependent parts as open.

How the Cosmic Codex handles an unknown time

Enter your best guess. The Codex holds back the parts that depend on the exact time. You choose how sure you are, from an exact time to unknown. When the time is uncertain, the app doesn’t show a rising sign, houses or the Human Design readings it can’t stand behind. Everything the date can carry (your Sun in astrology, Human Design and the Gene Keys, your numerology) is calculated and linked as usual.

If you find the time later, change it, and the rest of the chart fills in. For how the Codex reads your Human Design next to your astrology, see the Human Design app page.
