Human Design in five minutes

The wheel, the body, and one experiment.

A chart that is calculated, not read

Most maps of a person ask you to answer questions about yourself. Human Design asks for three facts — the date, the time and the place you were born — and calculates the rest. There is no questionnaire and no interpretation at the first step. The sky is measured, twice, and the measurements are drawn into a picture of a body. Everything the system says afterwards is a reading of that picture.

Some people find familiar patterns in a first reading; others find descriptions that do not fit. Human Design offers a language for exploring energy, attention and decisions. The calculation locates the gates, while the interpretation comes from the tradition. You can compare that interpretation with your experience without treating recognition as proof.

The wheel and the body

Two pictures hold the whole system. The first is a wheel — the same zodiac astrology uses, divided not into twelve signs but into sixty-four gates, each one a hexagram of the I Ching. The second is the bodygraph: nine shapes called centres, joined by thirty-six channels, with every gate of the wheel sitting inside one of the nine.

The two pictures are one picture. Each gate on the wheel has a home in the body, and the colour of a gate is the colour of the centre it belongs to. Use the labelled inspector below to choose a gate or centre and read its explanation. Pointer highlighting is an additional way to explore the same map.

In the app this is a live diagram: hd mandala bodygraph.

When a planet at either calculation moment sat inside a gate, the chart marks that gate as activated. When the gates at both ends of a channel are activated, that channel and its two centres are defined. Human Design reads definition as consistency and an open centre as sensitivity to changing circumstances. These are interpretations to explore, not measurements of your abilities.

Type, Strategy, Authority

Out of that picture come the three things Human Design is most used for.

Your Type names the aura pattern Human Design associates with your definition — its way of describing how energy meets other people. Generators and Manifesting Generators have a defined Sacral Center; the other Types are Projectors, Manifestors and Reflectors. Each offers a different lens on interaction, with no hierarchy of worth or capability.

Your Strategy follows from your Type: a suggested way to approach engagement. Generators explore response, Manifestors informing, Projectors recognition and invitation, and Reflectors the perspective of a lunar cycle for major decisions. The later lessons distinguish these practices from rules about what anyone is allowed to do.

Your Authority is the decision practice associated with your chart: the emotional wave that invites time, an immediate response, a quiet instinct, or a process involving conversation and environment. The tradition gives bodily experience a central role. You can notice that experience while still using reflection and practical information. The fourth card below, Profile, introduces the two-line pattern explored later in the course.

Try it: If your four cards are available, choose one description to compare with an ordinary decision over the next few days. What fits, what does not, and what remains unclear? Without a chart, notice the same decision without assigning it a Type: what did you feel, what information mattered, and did time change your view?

The experiment

The tradition presents Strategy and Authority as practices to explore. It pairs each Type’s signature — satisfaction, success, peace or surprise — with a not-self theme such as frustration, bitterness, anger or disappointment. These feelings can prompt reflection, but they do not prove that a decision was right or wrong. Circumstances, other people and ordinary needs matter too.

What this is not

A chart is not a set of permissions, and no gate or Type is better than another. Openness may invite learning through variety; definition may invite familiarity with a recurring pattern. Both carry gifts and challenges. The course offers these ideas for your consideration, and leaves their relevance to you.

Next, The nine centres gives you a readable first map of the bodygraph. Gates and channels follow, before Type, Strategy and Authority. Origins and finer calculations have their own places later in Foundations.
