Authority
Where the decision comes from, and how long it takes.

Strategy offers an approach to engagement. Authority adds a decision practice: the bodily cues, conversation or time that Human Design associates with your chart. The question for this lesson is how you might notice those processes in a small, non-urgent choice, without assuming that a chart can decide for you.
The tradition distinguishes the mind’s explanations from the experience it calls Authority. It emphasises bodily awareness for some charts and a process involving other people or environments for others. Reflection and practical information still have a place in your decisions; the lesson invites observation of another part of the experience.
Start with the available personal description
You can read your recorded Authority first, then compare the other descriptions. Without a personal result, the worked book-choice example in Applied Practice remains available later. For this lesson, notice how the approaches differ without assigning yourself one.
A ladder, not a list
The Codex lists seven authorities in an order derived from definition. Among the first five, the earliest applicable defined centre determines the chart’s Authority: Emotional before Sacral, then Splenic, Ego and Self-Projected. The final two describe charts without an inner deciding centre: Mental and Lunar. This is the system’s classification order, rather than a ranking of people’s judgement.

The order determines which description to read first. Emotional Authority takes precedence when the Solar Plexus is defined, which makes its relationship with time a useful starting point.
Emotional: the wave needs time
About half of all charts have a defined Solar Plexus Center, and for them the Authority is Emotional. Human Design describes an emotional wave that can colour a choice differently at different moments. Its teaching cautions against treating a single emotional high or low as the whole picture. That is a practice of noticing change, not a claim that your present feelings are false or unrelated to your circumstances.
The suggested practice is to revisit a non-urgent question across different moods, perhaps after sleeping on it. You might notice that an initial reaction changes, or that a preference remains. The tradition associates this with clarity over time; a quiet feeling does not by itself establish that a choice is right, and uncertainty may remain.
Sacral and Splenic: the body answers now
A defined Sacral Center with an open Solar Plexus gives Sacral Authority. Human Design describes this as an immediate response, sometimes felt as interest or withdrawal before words arrive. A concrete yes-or-no question can make it easier to notice. If no clear response appears, you can leave the question open rather than force a sensation into an answer.
A defined Spleen Center with both the Solar Plexus and the Sacral open gives Splenic Authority. The tradition associates it with a brief, quiet instinct in the present. You might notice an initial impression before building an explanation for it. That impression is something to consider alongside the situation, not proof that something is safe or dangerous.
Ego and Self: will, and the sound of one’s own voice
When the Solar Plexus, Sacral and Spleen are all open and the Heart Center is defined, the Authority is Ego. The question is not what is right but what there is genuine will for: what you want enough to commit to, and what you have the energy to see through. The tradition distinguishes two forms of it — one in which the will speaks out directly, and one in which it must be felt into first — and the Codex carries them as one Authority.
When none of those four are defined and the G Center is, the Authority is Self-Projected. The suggested practice is to speak a question aloud with someone you trust and listen to your own phrasing. Expressing a preference may help you notice it more clearly; the listener can make room for that exploration without deciding for you.
No inner authority
Two Authorities have no deciding centre. A chart with some definition, all of it at or above the Throat, has Mental Authority — sometimes called environmental, or none. The tradition suggests noticing how different surroundings feel and talking a choice through with trusted sounding boards. This gives conversation and context a role without assigning the decision to someone else.
A complete chart with no definition — the Reflector’s — has Lunar Authority. The tradition suggests observing a major, non-urgent choice over a lunar cycle, about a month. Different days may bring different perspectives. This timeframe is part of the practice, rather than a guarantee that a decision becomes ready on a particular day.
Try it: If your Authority card appears, choose a small, non-urgent decision and observe the process it describes. Record any cue, any change with time, and anything that does not fit; no clear sensation is also an observation. Without a card, compare a first impression with your view after a conversation or a night’s rest. What new information changed the choice?
Time is the thread
Timing is the useful comparison across these practices. Emotional Authority invites revisiting a question; Sacral and Splenic Authority emphasise an initial response or impression; Ego and Self-Projected Authority explore will and expression. Mental Authority uses environments and sounding boards, while Lunar Authority follows a longer observation period. These differences give you something concrete to compare without making every decision a test of alignment.
What this is not
Having no inner authority is not a deficit. These descriptions give different weight to bodily cues, surroundings, conversation and time; they do not measure intelligence or remove your capacity to choose. The tradition also values the mind’s observation and sharing. You can explore those roles while retaining reflection, evidence and responsibility in your own decisions.
